Greazefest – (Activity)

There are few era’s that have stood the test of time as that of the 50’s.  With immaculate hairstyling, popped collars and music that is an eclectic fusion of Rock and country (rockabilly being a friendly nod to hill billy), the 50s provided us with a time period that was epitomised by energetic rebiliouseness.

Greazefest, is a celebration of this bygone era and is surprising in its colour, energy and huge patronage.

The Hair

With curls set, flowers galore, enough hairspray to personally damage the o-zone and the iconic red bandana almost being a prerequisite for entry, the ladies of Greazefest prove that there is a culture that has definitely carved out a niche in Brisbane that is both vibrant, cool and willing to relive it’s youth almost 70 years after its birth.

While women were rocking some amazing hairdo’s, the fashions were not only restricted to the fairer sex.  Men embraced their inner greaser and owned their pompadours and finely combed side burns while wearing their dark jeans with the legs turned up as they strutted amongst the rows of historic vehicles or twirled on the dancefloor.

Why this car is automatic, It’s systematic, It’s hydromatic

Long sleek lines, riding low to the ground.  Tonnes of steel, hunched forward, ready to leap into action. Amazing paintjobs.

Row upon row of classic cars, a hit amongst aficionados interested in viewing vehicular splendour you might only see while watching reruns of John Travolta in Grease or Johnny Depp in Cry Baby.  There were two common themes that could be seen across the field amongst the glitter of automobiles and these were; an evident passion in restoring or maintaining the resplendent behemoths to such a high level and huge respect from those of us who understood the effort and time required to do so.

Swing baby yeah

Rock n roll will never die.  Elvis Presley was born over 80 years ago, the Beatles assisted with a resurgence in the late 60’s and although Don McLean spoke of the day that music died in 1959 (with the plane crash that took Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper) the longevity of Rock n roll and it’s defiance of Don’s statement and clear ability to cheat the coffin is plainly evident both in its influences of many artists today and the crowd of dancing Greazefest festival goers.

With high energy musical stylings played by a multitude of artists throughout the Greazefest festival, it is not uncommon for a 3-piece band consisting of a lead guitarist (on the typical rockabilly guitar), a drummer (with a penchant for spending lots of time on the snare) and…wait for it, a double bass (not the type of instrument you would drag to your local parties to pick up the chicks), to belt out tunes to a large crowd of patron’s west coast swinging, lindy hopping and twirling their partners for hours on end.

With a variety of food options available, some excellent Greazefestesque market stalls, fantastic artworks for sales and what seems to be an evergrowing culture of Kool, Greazefest is definitely something to behold and something to check out next time you have the chance.

Now, rocking up at a heritage-listed church on a Saturday night after sinking a few beveraginos is normally never on my list of planned activities. I'm not a exactly a sinner per se, but I can think of many activities that would be higher on my list than attending a church while inebriated...
