Speedy Gonzales – 1955 (estimated)

This little ditty was my first exposure to Mexico. Speedy Gonzales, one of the Warner Brothers Loony Tunes characters was often singing this catchy little ditty about….a cockroach of all things. Little did I know, there was further delights to Mexico than a colourful little mouse making a mockery of a black and white cat…and tequila (which, let’s be honest, is positively delightful in itself).

Guzman y Gomez

The colour, mexican music, the customer service from personnel that of Latin American flavour (adding to the authenticity of your visit to this little mexican taqueria) all make Guzman y Gomez quite the experience. Whether you order via an app or at the counter, the piped music will invariably have you tapping your feet to lyrics that mean not one iota to you.

Dos burritos por favor

The tortilla is a wonderful invention. Like a little corn blanket to wrap your mexican edibles in, to tuck them in safely while you savour them to their fullest.
White rice, Brown rice, mince – spicy or non, fried chicken – spicy or non, various sauces/dressings – in a burrito, in a bowl, drizzled over nachos or inside a taco. The flavour combinations seem endless (making it difficult to get to the eating point if you arrive with 2 teenage kids who struggle to decide what clothes to wear…on a school day…to a uniformed school). I like the spicy chicken, with some sour cream to balance it all out.

Breakfast Burrito….savoured by all, consumed by campeones

That’s champions in Spanish BTW. Champions that have spent a night imbibing, smashing copious amounts of colourful cocktails with pretty flags and sparklers (because, that is how I roll) sometimes awake to find that their morning is a little dustier that they would like – solution? Guzman y Gomez. Start your day off right with Bacon, Eggs, Hash, fancy mexican sauces all tightly wrapped in a layer of tortilla goodness (I tend to splash out on some extra protein and also get the GyG peeps to throw some spicy chorizo in there for good measure). The soft scrambled eggs with the crunchy bacon and hash browns, off set by the fresh guac and flavoursome salsa, all bring you to the point where you wish you could gleefully shoot your pistol in the air shouting “Ariba, Ariba”.

why can’t we have both?

Like the little Old el Paso taco girl stated, in a moment of genius, “why can’t we have both” – I want chips (seasoned, rough cut fries that are absolutely awesome btw), but I want a burrito. That seems like too much food – ¿Por qué no los dos?…¿Por qué no los dos? people.

If you’re look for some muy caliento for you lunch time munch time, give Guzman y Gomez a go.
