Red Hook – Burger review
Down a sidestreet alley way in the central business district is the last place one would venture in the hopes of sourcing Brisbane’s best burger….but venture we did, with Red Hook settled out of the way down an alley, obviously delving deeply into the consistantly growing laneway culture. Listening for the music and looking for the crowd was the easiest way to find this little burger joint and judging by the line waiting to order, popular doesn’t quite describe the level of appeal for the Red Hook carby treats.
No sleep till Brooklyn
With burgers and other treats (I don’t recall what they were, I was here for a burger) based upon New York eateries, Red Hook have been delivering up delectable lunch time goodness since 2014 and it’s location services the Brisbanite business crowd quite nicely. Giving their customers great service, surprisingly plentiful seating (for a laneway eatery), phat hip hop beats, gas heaters and complimentary blankets to stave off any cold weather as well as some good food, it is plainly evident why Red Hook is so popular.
Just get to the burger
For my testing pleasure, I purchased the Broolyn Cheese. A Beef pattie, with cheese, ketchup and special sauce on very lightly toasted buns….with a pickle garnish. The buns were nice and the cheese was awesome, it seemed to me that there were multiple types of cheese and it was just the right of gooeyness with the special sauce being very tasty.
Where the burger fell short though, was the patty. While I am all for precooked patties (the speed with which they can be turned around a delivered to the waiting masses is a definitely plus), the price I paid for my burger led me to feel as though I would be getting a handmade pattie with a little something something to it. Alas, it seemed like a medium rare precooked pattie on my Brooklyn bread.

Redemption song
While I enjoyed my burger, it had been talked up excessively by a few people in my circle of crazy burger eating business people and unfortunately, I felt this time the hype was slightly undeserved. Don’t get me wrong, it was a delicious, delicious burger (especially for something as plain as the Brooklyn Cheese….but the chips? Redemption
The surprise addition to my Friday burger meal, was a side order of fries that blew my mind. Now, I’ve never understood the British desire to drown their fried potato in litres of vinegar, thus making them less of the crispy variety and more of the soggy sort, but Red Hook surprise us with vinegar salt which added a completely new dimension to the fries.
Is this the best Burger in Brisbane, unfortunately not. Will I go back for more? Definitely – speed, flavour and atmosphere are completely worth a return.
