Stormie D’s Cupcakery – food review
In the same vein as Charlie Bucket opening a chocolate bar to reveal a golden ticket or your average New Zealander being handed a black jersey, such is the feeling of awe and excitement as you step through the door at Caloundra’s fabulous cupcakery.
While Stormie D’s is lacking in space and the decor could do with a little bit of work, the quaint feel of the cupcakery is aided by a decidingly pink palette, interesting decorations (think penny farthing sculptures and miniature cartoonesque llamas), but we aren’t here to discuss the visage of a shop, the presentation of the shelving, the comfort level of seating and colour of the signage, we are here to buy cupcakes
Diabetes be damned
With options ranging from mini-cupcakes or full-sized cupcakes through to macaroons and custom cakes, Stormie D’s (with the wholesome cupcakes, not to be confused with Donald Trumps Stormy with fake D’s) has a range of delectable treats to entice even the most discerning of miniature cake aficionados. The cupcake lineup is ever changing (with some regular staples ensuring you can always get your favourite sweetness any time you visit) and includes such awesome guest stars as Pineapple Coconut, Chocolate Red Velvet, Pinata, Lemon & Lime, Milo, Vanilla Passion to star alongside the usual cast of Marble, Ferrero, Red Velvet, Very Vanilla, Salted Caramel and Death by Chocolate.
Mini cupcakes come in cute pink egg containers, ensuring ease of transport when you decide to purchase a dozen iced wonders.
The variety available made it difficult for us to choose, so we relied solely upon the expertise of the Stormie D’s personnel
“Is there anything you DON’T want?” as she lovingly places our sugary delights in their cupcake carry cage.
“Diabetes?” was the best I could muster, to which I received a laugh and a “you’re out of luck
The proof is in the pudding
The taste. Fluffy and soft without being gooey is the best way I can describe the cupcakes themselves – whether it be the normal sized cupcakes or their diminutive, pygmy cupcake cousins. The greatest thing (well, for me) was the icing. It is an easy trap to fall into, for a cake creator to just ladle in copious amounts of sugar and hope that the likeness to confectionary will get them across the line (sugar is almost addictive as heroin, alcohol, or Miley Cyrus songs – so it is a pretty safe bet usually), but the icing here has the perfect amount of sugar. I, for one, am not a fan of seeing sound (which I sometimes feel I come close to when consuming sugar in vast quantities) and the icing tastefully (see what I did there) decorated onto these cupcakes is perfect.
For those of you that find gluten to them is like garlic to vampires, they’ve got you covered too (although, I’m fairly confident Gluten is probably quite delicious)
If you are looking for a little something, something for the someone special or for that special moment or to just eat something really cool looking, all by yourself on a Friday night while sipping champers and watching Pretty Woman, Stormie D’s has creations that would easily be admitted into the Cupcake Louvre (It’s a thing….surely)

Do I want to go back right now? Yes.
Should they franchise and have Stormie D’s Cupcakeries across Australia? Yes (somewhere near my home or work please)
